Portal Instructions:
THE ONION FOUNDATION HAS TRANSITIONED TO A NEW ONLINE GRANTS PORTAL.
PLEASE REVIEW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW BEFORE LOGGING INTO THE NEW SYSTEM.
Be sure to review and complete all of the “Steps to Apply” above, as well as specific instructions related to the grant program you are applying to. We accept applications submitted through our online grant management system, Giving Data. Please contact our Grants Administrator with any technical questions or for assistance with the portal. Please review these instructions carefully.
Your Giving Data Account
We transitioned to Giving Data, a new online portal, in the Fall of 2022, and applicants will need to create an account in this new system. Account login and password information from before July 2022 will not work in this new system.
For unsolicited or open applications, you will create an account on the application landing page – which you will find on either the Arts Program or Environment Program pages. The process for registering a new account for an unsolicited application is outlined step-by-step here. You may also request an activation email by contacting the Grants Administrator.
For current grantees and invited applications, we can email an invitation to “Activate Your Onion Foundation Portal Account.” Current grantees may also request an activation email by contacting the Grants Administrator. Email invitations expire after 30 days. Please get in touch with us to resend the invitation if necessary. Please add mail@givingdata.com and noreply@givingdata.com to your safe senders list to ensure you receive communications from the system.
Once you have created an account in the Giving Data portal, including for other foundations, you will use the same login information for future reporting and applications.
Generally, multiple users from the same organization will each have their own unique portal account and can collaborate on report forms and invited applications. However, unsolicited or open application forms do not allow multiple users to collaborate on the same form. In this case, we recommend using google docs to collaborate and then having one person enter the information and submit the form. If you are not sure which type of form you are using, please get in touch with the Grants Administrator.
GivingData hosts our online portal. Please add mail@givingdata.com and noreply@givingdata.com to your safe senders list to ensure you receive communications from the system.
Once you have an account, add a bookmark to https://onionfoundation-portal.givingdata.com so you can easily return to the portal.
If you try to log in with an incorrect password too many times, you may be locked out of your account. When that happens, please wait for two hours and then clear your browser cache before logging back in again. You can contact the Grants Administrator to reset your password at any time.
General Information About your Online Application
Links to open or unsolicited grant applications will be available when the application opens. Please refer to the deadlines listed in the Grants section of this website.
While an application is live on our site, a preview of the complete application will also be available. You can access this preview without logging into the grant portal. It is available on this website on the corresponding grant program page. This preview is hosted by Google Docs and is read-only. To create an editable version of the preview, select “Make a Copy” in the Google Docs File menu.
We are able to review your in-progress application. This is helpful if you need technical assistance. Please reach out to the Grants Administrator, and we can work together to resolve any problems.
Feel free to copy relevant information from previous applications to us or other funders.
Feel free to utilize lists and bullets to communicate your information clearly and concisely.
We appreciate and encourage brevity! Please note that character counts include spaces.

Page title tabs will have checkmarks if the page does not include any required fields. However, please review each page before submitting your application.

Save and Edit Application
The portal will automatically save your answers as you work through the application.
For security purposes, the system times out after 90 minutes. Saving refreshes the system.

To submit an application, all required questions must have answers, and there can be no flagged pages.
Click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the “Review and Submit” page to complete the submission process. The system will automatically send an email confirming your submission to the email address associated with your account. Please add mail@givingdata.com and noreply@givingdata.com to your safe senders list to ensure you receive communications from the system.
We will contact you if we need additional clarification regarding your submission.
